Making the Transaction to Interaction: An Integrated Learning Cycle

“Making the Transaction to Interaction” moves the learner through five learning phases:
Connect – Students connect their prior knowledge to the content, identify alternate conceptions, and activate previous experiential and conceptual backgrounds.
Investigate – Students test predictions while working through the scientific processes.
Clarify - Students analyze their findings; repeat the investigation phase to continue to build prior knowledge and replace misinformation, and then make new connections.
Transact – Students begin to make meaning from the text only after experiential and conceptual backgrounds have been activated and clarified.
Interact – Students write expressively and accurately in the content area, demonstrating their new knowledge base that has been solidified in steps 1-4.
Using the theme of insects, we will move from merely observing the parts of an insect to the immersion of the dissection process!

GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science)

We will explore the wonderful world of GEMS! This session will focus on inquiry-based learning using the kits, “Life through Time” and “Eggs, Eggs, Everywhere!” Exploring 7 sessions found in “Life through Time,” we will move through the unifying theme of life science: evolutionary change. Sessions include through simulated time travel, evolutionary time, and the concepts of adaptation, relatedness, and "deep time." “Eggs, Eggs, Everywhere” consists of 4 activities. This portion of the session will introduce you to the amazing egg and then explores related life science concepts. In addition to observation and other skills used in science, this kit uses role-playing, drama, and art to teach about the diversity of animals that come from eggs. In addition to these inquiry-based sessions, we will apply writing strategies to these real-world applications.
